SEVERE WEATHER, MINOR, MODERATE FLOOD and GALE FORCE WIND WARNINGS AS A RESULT OF THE CURRENT EAST COAST LOW

As per a Severe Weather Warning for immediate broadcast from the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) – an East Coast Low has developed and is drenching the Eastern Seaboard once again with heavy downpours and possible gale force winds exceeding 34-47 knots.

Whilst most of the expected rain is meant to stay offshore, there is a significant chance that it may impact shorelines and beachfront properties with a high risk of coastal erosion.

Based on current data, coastal areas, from the NSW South Coast are at a higher risk of heavy to more extreme rainfall however these warnings have not been released at this stage. Rainfall predicted to be between 10-20mm over the next few days however this may also increase.

The warning comes despite the Bureau of Meteorology’s announcement of an end to La Niña, a weather event responsible for increased rainfall.

Areas of immediate concern are:

  • East coast (Cairns to Coolangatta), QLD
  • Wide Bay and Burnett, QLD
  • Tweed Heads, Lismore, Byron Bay, Northern Rivers, and some parts of Eastern (coastal) NSW
  • Macquarie, Bogan, Lachlan and Darling River Systems, NSW
  • Nepean and Warragamba catchment areas, NSW

Please note whilst there haven’t been any direct evacuation orders, residents in the above noted low lying areas should be on standby and ready to evacuate should the waters rise to unsafe levels:

SEVERE WEATHER WARNING

  • HAZARDOUS SURF and MARINE WIND WARNING: Gale force winds predicted for East Coast, Capricornia Coast, Fraser Island Coast and Sunshine Coast Waters. Strong wind warning for Townsville Coast, Mackay Coast, Hervey Bay, Moreton Bay, Wide Bay and Gold Coast Waters.
  • MINOR TO MODERATE FLOOD WARNING: East Coast of QLD

Flood waters from Queensland will more than likely cause river level rises along the Culgoa, Birrie, Bokhara, Rarran, Darling Rivers and other border rivers in Northern NSW

New South Wales:

SEVERE WEATHER WARNING

  • MINOR FLOOD WARNING: Tweed Heads, Byron Bay, Ballina, Brunswick Heads, Evans Head and Yamba
  • HAZARDOUS SURF and MARINE WIND WARNING: Entire East Coast of NSW

South Australia:

SEVERE WEATHER WARNING

  • MODERATE TO MAJOR FLOOD WARNING: Inland areas and river regions
  • HAZARDOUS SURF and MARINE WIND WARNING: Coast of SA, Great Australian Bite

Victoria:

COLD WEATHER AND FROST WARNING

  • FROST AND BLACK ICE ON ROADS WARNING: Northeast, West, South and East Gippsland areas. Temperatures expected to reach subzero overnight.

Western Australia:

  • STRONG WIND WARNING: Leeuwin Coast, Albany Coast, Esperance Coast and Eucla Coast

Please ensure your sites are safe, tarped and locked up with any equipment removed from roofs and wind susceptible areas.

Flood Safety Advice:

Remember: If it’s flooded, forget it. For flood emergency assistance contact the SES on 132 500. For life threatening emergencies, call Triple Zero (000) immediately

 If you require rescue, assistance to evacuate or other emergency help, ring NSW SES on 132 500.

Remember these 4 lifesaving rules:

  1. Avoid drowning. Stay out of rising water, seek refuge in the highest available place.
  2. Prevent damage to your vehicle. Move it under cover, away from areas likely to flood.
  3. Avoid being swept away. Stay out of fast-flowing creeks and storm drains.
  4. Never drive, ride or walk-through flood water. Flood water can be deceptive and dangerous.
