Your Home & Contents Insurance Claim
Many of our customers in South-East Queensland have been impacted by what has been described as a ‘once-in-a-life-time’ thunderstorm, leaving properties severely damaged by hail stones, lightning and heavy rain.
After a natural disaster of this magnitude, it is completely understandable that our customers will have questions about their insurance repair process. We want to assure you that AJ Grant is committed to assisting you throughout the entire process, from emergency make safe (if required), through to the assessment of the damages and repairs to ensure your property is restored as quickly as possible.
An important message to our customers: – if you are currently not staying at your property, it is extremely important that you do not enter without talking to AJ Grant first. We understand that you may want to return home, however, it may not be safe to do so. Therefore, contact AJ Grant and we will advise if and/or when it is safe to return to your house. Your safety is our priority and we thank you for your understanding.

Making safe your property
AJ Grant may be assisting you with a make safe, meaning we have been appointed to make your property safe and not at risk of further damage.
We have been assessing the damages and categorised the varying levels of damage and provided you with an overview of the make safe process: –
LEVEL ONE: Single & double storey property, extensive damage to roof leaving it completely open, internal damages to ceiling and contents with no power to property
If your property has been categorised as Level One, the make safe process is likely to involve: –
ELECTRICIAN to disconnect and isolate power to the home, including solar (if required), install temporary power board where possible for restoration equipment such as drying machines (if not already disconnected at the fuse by Energex).
RESTORATIONS to install drying equipment and dehumidifiers as required to mitigate further loss.
CARPENTER/ROOFER to secure any internal linings or internal item/s deemed hazardous or a safety risk to you and your family . They will also inspect the tiled roof (type and size) to ensure the appropriate tarp is sourced to cover the entire roof line and make water tight to avoid water entry prior to any further rain events.
SOLAR TECH to remove, cap off and dispose of the damaged solar energy panel system to ensure glass cannot further contaminate the guttering and water tanks and also ensure the smashed panels are not at risk of coming off the roof.
CARPENTER/ROOFER to install a tarp, using heavy duty rope and sandbags to cover the entire roofline, including to remove and dispose of the broken/damaged and unsafe concrete tiles to ensure no further fall hazards.
For SAFETY purposes, if your roof is ‘highset’ an edge rail will be installed around the entire gutter line to safely install the tarp. A platform scaffold tower (2.5M wide) to be installed to safely remove items off the roofline.
All highset homes require this level of safety prior to any make safe commencing.
LEVEL TWO: Damage to tiled roof with minimal water entry, some external items damaged and property is still habitable
If your property has been categorised as Level Two, the make safe process is likely to involve: –
ELECTRICIAN to disconnect and isolate the power to the home, including solar (if required) (if not already disconnected at the fuse by Energex).
CARPENTER/ROOFER to inspect the tiled roof (type and size) to ensure the appropriate tarp is sourced to cover the entire roof line and make water tight to avoid water entry prior to any further rain events.
SOLAR TECH to remove, cap off and dispose of the damaged solar energy panel system to ensure glass cannot further contaminate the guttering and water tanks and also ensure the smashed panels are not at risk of coming off the roof.

LEVEL THREE: Metal roof with dents, external items damaged, electricity connected
If your property has been categorised as Level Three, the make safe process is likely to involve: –
ELECTRICIAN to disconnect and isolate power to the home, including solar (if required) if water has entered your home (if not already disconnected at the fuse by Energex).
ROOFER to install storm seal or butyl tape over the cracked skylights, minimal amount of cracked roof tiles or polycarbonate roof sheets.
Your Home & Contents Insurance Claim
We would like to advise all our customers that due to the significant volume in claims, it is taking a little longer to schedule a time for our assessors to attend site and inspect the damages. We are triaging all claims to determine the most severely damaged homes to ensure the properties and families most impacted are protected.
